Principal’s Message: 

This month we celebrate the contributions of all Black people who have made such a significant difference for the United States and for all Americans! We celebrated Black History Month with a great live dance performance, which our students participated in at lunch! 

Congratulations to our Cheer and JV and Varsity Dance teams who all placed First!! The Nationals competition is coming up and we are so proud of all our Cheer and Dance team athletes and coaches. 

Speaking of taking care of business, I want to congratulate all of our Wrestlers who competed at CIF this past weekend, and a special shout out to Serineh who qualified for the Masters this next weekend as only a Freshman!!!

Our Winter Guard and Winter Line both placed second in their first competition of the season. Our very own Jazz Band will be performing some classical hits this Friday, February 16, at Travel Town from 4:30-5:30 PM.

On Friday night, our Boys Basketball team had a magical comeback to move on to the Quarter Finals on Tuesday night at Hoover beginning at 7:00 PM. 

At this point, Counselors have visited all classrooms. Please ensure your child is completing their class  registration for next year.  

As we look ahead to this upcoming week, please come out and celebrate our “Hoover is Home” Open House on Thursday, February 15, from 5:30-7:30. This is a night to showcase all of the great work from our students and teachers, along with celebrating what makes Hoover special!! Many of our groups will also be selling some great food, so please bring some money to help support. 

We look forward to a great week ahead!

Student Intent to Return Survey

As we look ahead to 2024-25, we are asking families to let us know your plans for next school year. On February 2, you received an intent to return survey from GUSD Student Support Services. Please complete the survey form by Tuesday, February 20. You must complete a separate survey for each student who currently attends a GUSD school. Thank you for your support!

Registration Update (9th - 11th grade) - Thank you to all the social science, English, and ECA teachers for supporting our students the last 2 weeks during the registration process. We could not have done the work without you. All students have started selecting their courses for next year. Students - be sure to complete your Google Form and enter your course selection in Q (student portal) BEFORE your individual meeting with counselors in the Student Union. Counselors will meet with students who have completed the required steps.

Seniors, Did you know that *some* CSU Applications are still open! Do you have a 2.5 or above GPA in your A-G classes? Are you interested in attending a 4-year university? If you have not applied, you are lucky! Many Cal States still have their applications open! Some of the schools that are still open are CSUN, Pomona, San Francisco State University, CSU East Bay, and more! Hoover HS & Local Scholarships for the Class of 2024

The California Credit Union Scholarship - This year the credit union will provide a total of $30,000 in scholarships to students who are motivated in their academic studies and active in their schools and communities. Eligibility includes high school seniors and community college students transferring to a four-year university who maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0, academic performance, school or community involvement, a letter of recommendation, and an essay submission.  Applications are available through Friday, March 8, 2024 and winners will be announced on Monday, April 8, 2024. The Assistance League of Glendale Scholarship (ALG) - The deadline to submit your application to Ms. Iraheta or Mr. Melgar is March 11, 2024. Every year, ALG honors a deserving Hoover High senior with a $2,000 scholarship. The application has been posted in Ms. Iraheta’s Google Classroom or click on the link: ALG Application.

The Community Foundation of the Verdugos Scholarships - Seniors, apply, apply, apply! The deadline to apply is March 4th. Apply early, as many of the scholarships require a recommendation letter, transcripts, and/or personal statement to apply.

• “Big Man Fritsche” Scholarship Leonard Fritsche was a long-time resident of Glendale and La Crescenta. He was known by many as “The Big Man.” This award is for a student who resides in and is graduating from a public/private high school in the Verdugo Region (Burbank, Glendale, foothill communities of Sunland, Tujunga, La Crescenta, La Canada-Flintridge, Montrose, and Verdugo City) and is pursuing a vocational study (career technical path with examples that include woodworking, auto mechanics, plumbing, landscaping, dental hygienist, vet tech, electrical, cosmetology, culinary arts, etc.).

• Dr. John & Mae Benjamin Scholarship benefits a student pursuing a medical career.

• Christopher A. Burrows Memorial Scholarship is for a student who resides in La Canada-Flintridge or La Crescenta, and is graduating in June from a high school in La Canada Flintridge or La Crescenta.

• Dellinger Scholarship honors Judith and Ernest Dellinger and benefits high school seniors graduating from a Burbank Unified School District school.

•  The Emilie Cacho Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to Latina students from Hoover High School who are interested in pursuing a career in mental health, school counseling, psychology or social work at either a two-year or four-year college or university.

• The First Christian Church of Glendale Scholarship is awarded to students who profess a belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and their personal Savior. The student must be a graduating senior and a U.S. Citizen. Students must show proof of a residency in the Glendale, La Crescenta, La Cañada Flintridge, Montrose, Verdugo City, Sunland or Tujunga area, even if attending other area private or public high schools.

• Glendale Latino Association Scholarship requires that a student have Latino heritage and be graduating from a Glendale Unified School District public/private high school or Allan F. Daily Continuation High School.

• Gonzales Harris Bilingual Scholarship was created by three sisters who valued education. Students must be graduating from a public or private high school in Burbank, Glendale, and the foothill communities of Sunland, Tujunga, La Crescenta, La Cañada Flintridge, Montrose, and Verdugo City (Verdugo Region), have a minimum overall 3.5 GPA, provide proof of U.S. Citizenship and be able to demonstrate fluency in both Spanish and English.

• John & Elsie Krikorian / Women Achievers Journalism Scholarship was established in memory of the founders of Business Life Magazine and is for students studying journalism, marketing or business.

• Frank & Ann Leone Scholarship honors a graduating senior of Glendale High School.

• The Sambar Scholarship Endowment gives awardees who are graduating from a Glendale Unified School District area public or private high school with “a little hand up” in their college goals.

• Tuesday Afternoon Club Scholarship is offered to a student graduating from one of the following Glendale area high schools: Allan F. Daily Continuation High School, Crescenta Valley High School, Glendale High School and Herbert Hoover High School.

La Crescenta Woman’ Club Scholarship - The LCWC is offering various scholarships. The application must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2024. Link to application: LCWC Application.

Tutoring 

Just a reminder that we are still offering tutoring this spring. Second semester is a fresh start, if you are not happy with your grades or got an F or a D in any A-G or graduation requirement class. Remember, grades of “C” or higher means 4-year colleges and universities. Please reflect on your semester 1 grades. What worked? What didn’t? Communicate with teachers, counselors, admin, coaches. Most importantly, get help and attend tutoring. See the schedule below:
