Glendale Unified’s Gagik Galfayan Named One of Five 2027 California Teachers of the Year
Wilson Middle School educator will represent California’s teaching profession as a statewide ambassador throughout 2027.
GLENDALE, Calif., October 12 , 2026 — Woodrow Wilson Middle School history teacher Gagik Galfayan has been named one of five 2027 California Teachers of the Year by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, recognizing his outstanding commitment to students, schools and community.
The statewide honor follows Galfayan’s selection as Glendale Unified’s 2026 Teacher of the Year and one of 16 Los Angeles County Teachers of the Year. Throughout 2027, he and his fellow state honorees will serve as ambassadors for the teaching profession and represent California educators.
Galfayan teaches seventh-grade history at Wilson, where he also serves as History Department Chair, teaches yearbook and leads the Debate Club. His thoughtful instruction and calm leadership have made him a valued teacher and colleague.
“California’s Teachers of the Year represent the very best of our profession,” said State Superintendent Tony Thurmond. “They see the potential in every student.”
Presented by the California Department of Education and supported by the California Teachers of the Year Foundation, the program has honored outstanding educators since 1972. The selection process includes an extensive application review and interviews, with consideration given to teaching practices, classroom environments and candidates’ relationships with students.
Glendale Unified congratulates Galfayan on this exceptional recognition and thanks him for the opportunities he creates for students every day.
