John Muir Elementary Celebrates 100 Years of Mustang Pride

John Muir Elementary marked its 100th birthday with a joyous campus picnic on Friday, September 25, bringing generations of the Muir community together to celebrate a century of learning, friendship and Mustang pride.
Principal Vie Nazarian started the program by welcoming guests including former principals and students who were in attendance. Former Muir PTA president and former GUSD Board of Education member Joylene Wagner shared heartfelt centennial remarks reflecting on the school’s history and lasting impact. The program also included the unveiling of a new centennial mural, featuring a powerful Muir mustang in the school colors of blue and yellow, featured on the school building. Principal Nazarian recognized Muir parents Peter Phan, who painted the mural and Erich Lazar, who designed the artwork,
The celebration then transitioned to a series of musical performances as Muir alumna Soseh Aramouni Keshishyan, a costume designer and well-known Armenian folk singer, returned to her former school for a special performance. She was followed by Muir students singing the school spirit song, “We Are Mustang Proud.”
The cheers grew even louder when the Glendale High School Dance Team made a guest appearance to close the program with a mix of group and solo dances. Muir students joined the fun by dancing and cheering along from the crowd.
A special “Muir Museum” curated by Muir teachers and staff gave guests a special trip through the school’s past, with displays featuring photographs and historical items from throughout its 100-year history.
After the program, the birthday celebration continued with music, food trucks, concessions and games throughout the campus. Guests could also purchase special centennial tiles to be adhered to the campus benches and write birthday cards sharing memories and well wishes for the school.
After 100 years, one thing is clear: Muir Mustang pride is still going strong! Happy Birthday John Muir Elementary.
