Hoover High School Celebrates Opening of State-of-the-art Aquatic Center

Glendale Unified School District and Hoover High School celebrated the grand opening of the school’s new Aquatic Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, October 7. The event marked a major milestone in the district’s ongoing investment in modern, student-centered facilities made possible through voter-approved Measure S funds.
Board of Education President Ingrid Gunnell, Superintendent Dr. Darneika Watson and Principal Jeremy Spurley joined Hoover student-athletes William Avenessian, Jaelynn Romano and David Tarakhchyan in addressing the crowd before cutting the ceremonial purple ribbon. Attendees included members of the Glendale Unified Board of Education, former board members, district administrators, community partners, contractors, and the many team members who helped bring the project to life, including project manager Raymond Mikaily, whose leadership helped guide the complex from planning to completion.
Representatives from the offices of LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Senator Sasha Perez, and Assemblymember Nick Schultz were in attendance to demonstrate their commitment to students. They each provided certificates of recognition that will be proudly displayed in the coach’s office.
“Investing in modern athletic facilities strengthens student health, leadership, resilience and teamwork. Modern, safe, accessible facilities support whole-student learning,” said President Gunnell. “With this new, competition-ready aquatic center, we’re showing Glendale’s students that their entire educational experience matters.”
She also reminisced about her own days as the only female swimmer of the Hoover High swim team, noting the full-circle moment and celebrating the much-improved facilities current Hoover students will enjoy–specifically a stair-way entry that doesn’t require hoisting oneself in and out of the pool.
The student-athletes reflected on how the new center deepens their sense of pride and motivation as they head into their senior season—expressing gratitude for a space that honors their hard work and brings their teams together.
The stunning new complex features a 25-meter by 25-yard, L-shaped competition pool, capacity for ten swim lanes, a regulation water-polo course, Musco LED lighting, and a range of upgraded amenities like bathrooms, a Coach’s office and a concession stand.
Principal Spurley emphasized the pool’s value for the overall student experience.
“Hoover students, we encourage you to dive in, take pride, and make this space your own,” he said. “Let it be where you build confidence, celebrate victories, and carry the Tornado spirit forward.”
The opening of the Hoover High Aquatic Center underscores Glendale Unified’s commitment to creating innovative learning environments where students can thrive—academically, athletically, and personally.
