Glendale Unified Launches New Online College and Career Academy
The OCCA will launch August 2021 with one class of ninth grade students. All current eighth graders are encouraged to apply. Students living within Glendale Unified boundaries will have priority, but the program is available to students living outside the District. The program will expand each year to eventually include grades 9-12. In the future, the District plans to develop an OCCA pathway beginning in middle school.
“In Glendale Unified, we know that every child has different strengths and educational needs. We are committed to providing innovative pathways that enable each of our students to achieve their aspirational goals,” said Glendale Unified Board of Education President Shant Sahakian.
“In Glendale Unified schools, we are excelling together to provide our students with endless pathways for success,” said Glendale Unified Superintendent Dr. Vivian Ekchian. “This means offering equitable opportunities for every child to succeed in college, career, and life.”
In November 2020, the Glendale Unified College and Career Division was awarded a 1.75 million-dollar K12 Strong Workforce Program grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office (CCCCO) to develop the Online College and Career Academy. The K12 Strong Workforce Program (SWP) is an ongoing statewide funding opportunity designed to support K-12 local education agencies in creating, improving, and expanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.
