Glendale Unified Wins CSBA Golden Bell Award for One Glendale After School Youth Sports Program

GLENDALE, CA – Glendale Unified School District has been awarded a 2020 “Golden Bell” award from the California School Boards Association (CSBA) for the One Glendale after school youth sports program. The award was presented during a virtual awards ceremony last week.

This year marks the 41st anniversary of the Golden Bell Awards, which promotes excellence in education and school board governance by recognizing outstanding programs and school board governance practices. According to the CSBA website, “Golden Bell Awards reflect the depth and breadth of education programs and governance decisions supporting these programs that are necessary to address students’ changing needs.” The One Glendale program was awarded in the category, “Community Schools through Partnerships and Collaboration.”

The One Glendale after school youth sports program is a collaboration between Glendale Unified and the City of Glendale, with additional community partnerships. The program provides free after-school co-ed recreational sports, including flag football, basketball, soccer, and volleyball, for fourth- and fifth-graders at Cerritos, Columbus, Thomas Edison, Thomas Jefferson, Horace Mann, John Marshall, John Muir, and R.D. White Elementary Schools. The One Glendale program builds positive health, character, and academic outcomes for participating students.

“One Glendale is a fantastic partnership between Glendale Unified and the City of Glendale to promote teamwork, and encourage our students to make healthy choices and connect with our schools and our city. We are honored that our district is being recognized for this outstanding program,” said Glendale Unified Board of Education President Dr. Armina Gharpetian.

The One Glendale program is currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will resume when public health guidelines determine it is safe for students to return for in person learning.
