Happy Mother's Day!
May 7, 2021
Dear Glendale Unified Students, Employees, Families, and Community:
My heartfelt wishes for a Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and mother figures in our community. I never truly understood the important role mothers play in their child’s life until I became one myself. In addition to being caretakers, our mothers are our advisors, coaches, cheerleaders, and role models. These roles never end, even as our children grow into adults.
Although our moms deserve gratitude and celebration every day, I think an extra special recognition is deserved this year as the role of mother has been even more broadly expanded. This has been a year filled with new challenges due to the pandemic as we balanced our usual commitments with the added responsibility of working remotely, caring for family members, or facilitating distance learning for our children. Nationwide data shows that women, and mothers in particular, have been disproportionately impacted by these challenges.
Public schools are the center of our communities. In addition to educating students, I believe as a school district we have a special opportunity to connect children and families with the resources and support they need to succeed. This is a community effort. Our administrators, teachers, and staff are incredibly grateful for the support we receive from our families and community partners – often organized and led by our talented and powerful mothers.
A mentor of mine recently shared with me, “there are moments in our lives for each of us to reflect on how truly special our mothers have been to us. Each year, Mother’s Day helps remind us of what is important in life and what we should always treasure.”
I truly treasure this Glendale Unified community and appreciate your support and partnership as we work together to support our students and families.
Happy Mother’s Day,
Vivian Ekchian, Ed.D.
