Six GUSD Schools Earn California Distinguished Schools Title

GLENDALE, CA – Six Glendale Unified schools have been recognized as California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education (CDE): Balboa, Mark Keppel, Horace Mann, Monte Vista, Valley View, and R.D. White Elementary.

The 2020 California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes California elementary schools that have made exceptional gains in implementing academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education. According to the CDE website, awardees demonstrate excellence in teaching, learning, and collaboration, but also highly successful school climate efforts ranging from real-time conflict resolution to positive behavior intervention.

“These outstanding schools don’t just educate students; they also provide the young people of California the tools they need to be successful after graduation,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. “Thanks go to all the staff at these schools - teachers, administrators, classified employees - and parents, who are working together to provide high-quality educational experiences for all of their students.”

“Our dedicated teachers, classified staff, and administrators work tirelessly alongside our parents and community to provide an exceptional education that empowers our youth to achieve their aspirational goals,” said Glendale Unified Superintendent Dr. Vivian Ekchian. “I am so proud to celebrate this wonderful recognition of their hard work with the entire Glendale Unified community.”

The Distinguished Schools program recognizes schools based on performance and progress on state indicators as specified on the California School Dashboard, including test scores, suspension rates, and conditions and climate. Elementary and secondary schools are recognized in alternate years.
