Roosevelt Teacher Randy Kamiya Honored with UCLA
“Extra Yard for Teachers” Award

GLENDALE, CA – Roosevelt Middle School Teacher Randy Kamiya has been selected as the winner of UCLA’s “Extra Yard for Teachers” award for effectively utilizing STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) education to inspire, motivate, and engage students. Mr. Kamiya will be honored with an on-field presentation during the UCLA football game on October 5, where he will be presented with a 10,000 dollar donation to Roosevelt.

The Extra Yard for Teachers award is presented by UCLA Athletics in partnership with the College Football Playoff Foundation and the Pac-12 Conference. The mission of Extra Yard for Teachers is to elevate the teaching profession by inspiring and empowering quality teachers. Mr. Kamiya was nominated for the award by Roosevelt Principal Dr. Kyle Bruich for his commitment to STEAM education.

In addition to teaching math and science, Mr. Kamiya has developed a vibrant robotics program at Roosevelt where students learn to use technology and coding skills to solve complex tasks through robotics. He was instrumental in developing the Glendale Unified Elementary Robotics Tournament. Now in its 10th year, the tournament has brought robotics learning to students in all 20 Glendale Unified elementary schools. Additionally, Mr. Kamiya serves as an advisor for the Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) Schools Program, administered by the University of California. In the MESA program, students practice important skills that will propel them to achieve the rigor and expertise required to be strong candidates for top colleges and universities.

In a letter of congratulations, the UCLA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics stated that Mr. Kamiya was selected for the Extra Yard for Teachers award for making a, “tremendous impact on students at Roosevelt Middle School and throughout the Glendale Unified School District by connecting students to technology and problem-solving skills, as well as equipping them to solve real-world problems and pursue opportunities in higher education.”

“We are incredibly lucky to have Mr. Kamiya on our staff and our community,” said Roosevelt Principal Dr. Kyle Bruich. “He provides our students with valuable education and hands-on experience that will prepare them for success in college and 21st century careers.”

Roosevelt Middle School has a strong focus on STEAM education. Students have access to advanced coding and digital arts elective courses and computer science instruction is embedded directly into the curriculum for all science classes. Beginning with the 2019-20 school year, Roosevelt will transition to a STEAM-focused magnet school, open to students living in- and outside Glendale Unified School District boundaries.

Mr. Kamiya will be honored and presented with a 10,000 check at the UCLA vs. Oregon State football game on Saturday, October 5, at 6:00 p.m. at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena.
