Crescenta Valley Coaching Staff
Shawn Zargarian, Head Varsity Coach
Coach Shawn Zargarian is all about relationships. His teams regularly outplay, out-execute and out-hustle opponents in large part because of player buy-in. Shawn builds trust in his program with love, loyalty, honesty, and high expectations. Evidence of this is found throughout his association with Falcon Basketball.
Whether it’s words of encouragement in the campus hallways, a personal text at just the right time, or a heart-to-heart conversation, Shawn has a knack for connecting with his players, building allegianceand devotion through integrity. Simply put, his players know he loves them. It all came full-circle last year
as his wife Nadin fought an aggressive form of cancer that ultimately took her life in the summer.
“Our guys picked me up at a time when I needed it most,” Shawn says. “We’re there for each other.
That’s what our program has always been about - standing with each other, taking care of each other. The
basketball end is important, but the relationships are the most lasting part. It’s as special as it is indescribable.”
Shawn was introduced to Falcon basketball as a 15-year old and immediately began building lifelong bonds. On-court success
followed. As a player, his teams won 66 of their 77 games in large part because of the qualities he possessed in his youth and instills
in his players today. The former captain and all-tournament performer was the 1995 Defensive Player of the Year on the 25-2 squad that ranked as high as second in the state of California. By season’s end, he received the program’s longest-running honor, the Charles Schrobilgen Memorial Award.
“CV basketball helped shape my perspective as a young man,” Coach says. “I played in a program that went above and beyond
the court. Coaching here gives me the chance to repay that by continuing and elevating that tradition.”
Indeed, Shawn’s teams have soared to heights previously unknown in the program’s proud history. Last year’s team tied the
all-time single-season record of 29 wins. Coach Z guided his squad to the CIF semi-finals for the third time in his career then saw the Falcons make the state playoffs for just the fourth time in school history - three coming with Shawn at the reigns. The 2018-19 squad was the first to win a state playoff game and charged all the way to the California State Region Final.
“I’m proud of what our young men accomplished on the floor last year - matching the school win record, winning three state
playoff games. It’s really something. What means much more is the way members of the Falcon family care for each other.”
That care translates to basketball success. Over the last decade Shawn’s teams have averaged more than 20 wins per season, a
benchmark of excellence. During that time, the Falcons have finished first or second in Pacific League play 7 times, settling for third the other three occasions.
Shawn enters the year with career milestones in reach and on the horizon. Just 34 varsity wins shy of 300, Shawn is also 62
victories away from becoming the winningest coach in the history of a program that has won 7 out of every 10 games it’s played since the school first fielded a team in 1963.
“The program has always been about players’ unselfishness and willingness to lay it on the line for each other,” says Coach Z. “That’s who we are and always have been. We find a way to play competitive basketball no matter the personnel. Our track record speaks for itself.”
Though he enters the season without the physical presence of his wife for the first time as head coach, Shawn is surrounded by
the love of his players and family. With his sons, Vaughn, 12, and Christian, 9, at the center of his life, Shawn's life view is simple;
“What matters above all is the relationships you build with the people you love. That’s the essence of our program and the
LET'S GO ROUDI! essence of life.”
