  • The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick

    You should read this book because it is a story unlike any you have read.  It is told in both words and pictures, and it focuses on the life of Hugo Cabret, an orphan living in a clock tower of a Paris train station.  Very imaginative, beautifully written, and truly a heart-felt read!  Give it a try!   (Recommended by Mrs. Chambers)

     

    Wonder by R. J. Palacio

    You should read this book because you will never forget the main character, Auggie Pullman.  Born with a facial anomaly, Auggie has been homeschooled all his life, until now.  Follow Auggie on his adventures as he navigates fifth grade.  This is a great book about family, friendship, loyalty, and respecting differences.  Everyone should read this book!  (Recommended by Mrs. Chambers)

     

    The Trumpet of the Swan by E. B. White

    You should read this book because it is full of adventure, has lots of mishaps and a happy ending.  (Recommended by A. S.)

     

    Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

    You should read this book because it's a fantastic historical fiction novel about a girl named Isabelle who's a slave in the period of time right before the Revolutionary War, and has to serve a cruel master while struggling to keep her younger sister safe.  (Recommended by P. E.)

     

    Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J. K. Rowling

    You should read this book because it is so much fun and romantic!  It's so funny and has cliff-hangers.  It's about a girl named Callie who loves drama class.  They are putting on a play called "Moon Over Mississippi" on which she helps build the set.  She falls in love when she meets twin brothers, and she does what she likes.  (Recommended by A.     Sisters by Raina Tegemier

    You should read this book because it is about showing love for your siblings and your families.  The author, Raina, spends a week in the car with her sister and brother, with her mom driving, and learns to love them.  (Recommended by A. S.)

    Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk

    You should read this book because it is a page-turner.  You will not be able to put it down!  Set in a small town during World War II, narrator Annabelle's quiet life changes drastically when a dark-hearted city girl moves in with her grandparents.  Full of twists and mysteries, sometimes harsh, always thought-provoking.  It's a book that will stay with you for a long time.  (Recommended by Mrs. Chambers)

    You should read this book if you are a fan of Wolf Hollow (by the same author).  This book is about Crow, a free-spirited girl growing up on a tiny, beautiful island off the coast of Massachusetts.  But who is Crow?  How did she come to be adopted by Osh, the kind man who rescued her from a small boat when she was a baby?  Who were her parents?  Where did she come from?  These are all mysteries that unravel in this great, adventurous read!  (Recommended by Mrs. Chambers)

    Shadow Magic by Joshua Kahn

    You should read this book because it is full of magic and adventure.  It can be a little dark at times, for this book is set in a kingdom where necromancers rule, as well as being a murder mystery.  Kingdoms, forbidden magic, giant bats, and charismatic heroes are only a few amazing features in this series.  (Recommended by A.     The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani

    You should read this book because it's well-written, based on a fascinating topic, and is rich in language and imagery.  The story is set in 1947 when India was freed from British rule and was divided into two-countries: Pakistan and India.  The book is written in the form of a diary and told from the perspective of a young girl struggling to understand why her country has been broken up, and why her life has changed dramatically overnight.  (Recommended by Mrs. Chambers)

    Holes by Louis Sacher

    You should read this book because it is about a boy who gets in trouble when he shouldn't be.  He gets sent into a "bad boys" camp, Camp Green Lake.  He has to dig holes in the hot sun.  They say it was to turn him into a good boy, but was it really?  What was the secret behind all the digging?  It was a miracle of a lifetime that helped them out of the mess.  (Recommended by E.
