  General Info | Enrollment Requirements

Student reading State law requires that children must be at least 4 years, 7 months of age as of July 2 prior to the opening of year-round classes and at least 4 years, 9 months of age by December 2 for schools on the traditional schedule to enter kindergarten. To enroll in first grade, the child’s age must be at least 5 years, 9 months, also by December 2.

Kindergarten registration begins as early as March. For other grades, contact a local school for signup schedules.

Proof of Residency Required

Most students new to the district need only go to their appropriate level school of attendance in order to register. Proof of residency in the Glendale Unified School District will be required of all new enrollees. A transfer slip from the former school is helpful in registration. The new school will request that a student’s records be forwarded directly from the former school.

Questions on school boundaries, residency requirements or related data may be directed to the attendance office of the individual schools or by contacting the Office of Student Support Services at the Administration Center.
The parent or guardian of a child must present proof of age before a student will be admitted to school. Such proof may be in the form of a birth certificate, baptismal certificate or passport.

Proof of Immunizations

State law mandates that students ages 4-17 complete immunization requirements that include protection from polio, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus (DPT), measles (Rubeola), mumps and rubella (MMR). Before a student is admitted to a Glendale school, parents must provide written proof that the child has been immunized.

The L.A. County Health Dept. requires all students entering kindergarten, or entering first grade who did not attend kindergarten, to show written evidence of a tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) within the past year, hepatitis B vaccination and a second measles immunization.
In addition, all seventh-graders must have hepatitis B vaccinations, a second MMR, and a vaccination against chicken pox.
Students from outside of California enrolling in other grades must have proof of a Mantoux test at a previous time.
Immunizations and the Mantoux skin test may be obtained from a private physician or from the L.A. County Community Health Center in Glendale.

State law also requires that all children must have received a health examination within 18 months prior to entering first grade. The purpose of this exam is to identify physical disabilities or medical conditions before they become chronic and adversely affect students’ learning abilities.

Further information on these topics is available in the schools or by contacting the Office of Health Services at the Administration Center.
