The Glendale Unified School District
(GUSD) is proud to offer four elementary foreign language programs, whose goal
is that all participating children will be bilingual and biliterate at the end
of elementary school. In 2007, Keppel Elementary began its Korean Dual Immersion program with a Federal Foreign
Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant.
With the application for Federal funding, the umbrella title of Foreign
Language Academies of Glendale (FLAG) was developed to unite and support all
the programs. It was felt that a special
title to encompass all the elementary foreign language programs would help in
their promotion and emphasize the uniqueness of
these programs in the public schools.
In 2008, GUSD added FLAG/German Dual Immersion at Franklin Elementary
and interest in our current programs and new ones continues to grow throughout
the community. The Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) began its dual
language programs with a Title VII grant at Edison Elementary in 2002. In 2003 the first Spanish dual language
Kindergarten began at Edison Elementary, the program currently runs K-5, with a
wait list for the two kindergartens. In
response to community interest, an Armenian Heritage Language Magnet program
was begun in 2006 at Jefferson Elementary.
The current program is now K-3 with new grades and classes annually. FLAG Korean Dual Immersion Program FLAG Korean Program is taught at Keppel Elementary School by fully credentialed bilingual teachers and adhere to California state and national standards in all subjects. Currently there are 61 students in the program (36-K and 25-1st graders). Of the 61 students, 31 are Keppel students, 20 are from other GUSD schools, and 10 are from out of district. Students in this program have 50% of the day in English and 50% in the non-English language throughout elementary school. Literacy is begun in both languages and the language of instruction is strictly divided during the day by time and/or content. At beginning levels, students may respond in either language but the teacher only speaks and instructs in the target language. FLAG/Korean contact FLAG/Spanish and FLAG/German are 90/10 models, meaning that initially instruction is 90% in the non-English language. The percentage of English increases annually until 50% of the day is in English and 50% in the non-English language. Throughout elementary school, the percentage never drops below 50% in the non-English language. FLAG/Japanese Program (starting Fall 2010) Last Modified on 7/9/2010 2:54:10 PM |
